Plastic Surgery: Origin And Development
Obsession for good look is as old as mankind itself. In their quest to improve appearance, man has always been looking forward to find something new. Plastic surgery is nothing but the outcome of the quest itself. To explain, plastic surgery is the process that includes both surgical and non surgical procedure to change the look and function of the body. The term includes both cosmetic enhancement and functionally reconstruction procedure.
Plastic Surgery owes its origin to the ancient India. Indian physicians in the 700 BC had made the use of graft skin to reconstruct the damaged part of the body. The surgery existed in ancient Rome too. The Romans used to perform some simple process of repairing damaged ears around 1st century BC. However, the modern plastic surgery was originated and developed in western countries like USA and New Zealand especially during the world war periods. It was developed tremendously in the USA in the 20th century. Etimologically, the term was derived from the Greek word plastikos.
During the yester years, plastic surgery has evolved a lot. There are various ways and techniques to perform the surgery. Some of them are incision, excision, microsurgery, laser surgery, liposuction. In plastic surgery, the process of skin tissue transfer (skin grafting) is very common.
In the developed technique, any part of the body can be replanted by anastomosing the divided blood vessels along with nerves and other injured structures. The whole procedure is a part of the microsurgical process. The success of the surgery depends on some factors like mechanism of the injury, correct management of the amputated part, skill of the doctors. This microvascular free tissue transfer is a routine surgical procedure of the plastic surgery today. Doctors today are able to use tissue from any part of the body without harming the part of the body. For example, a doctor can take a part of the abdomen of a woman to reconstruct the breast without harming the muscle of the abdomen itself.
Reconstruction plastic surgery can be done in cases of burn, facial bone fracture, infection or disease. Common reconstruction process takes place in cases like breast restructure, burn survival, cleft lip. To conclude, plastic surgery includes both functional and aesthetic elements.
