Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome In Young Men Associated With Nocturia

Sleep-ApneaA new study reveals that male Nocturia - the awakening from sleep at night to pass urine, specially in the young men’s are associated with the Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS).

Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep. The apneic event includes a minimum 10 second interval between breaths, with either a neurological arousal, a Blood oxygen desaturation of 3-4% or greater, or complete stoppage of airflow.

The study was done study done by Dr. Yoji Moriyama from Gifu University School of Medicine and colleagues involving 73 persons. They were divided into two groups, having age more than 50 years and having age less than 50 years.  Their behavior were analyzed through a set of questionnaire.

They found that more than 30 patients are suffering from Nocturia (41%) with OSAS.

Moreover they found that Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI) and International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) in the patients having Nocturia were higher than the patients without nocturia.

Thus concluding that the patients of age less than 50 years suffering from Nocturia are more prevalent towards Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome.
