MRI Scans Prompts More Breast Patients to Opt for Mastectomies Over Lumpectomies
In the recent research, American Association of Oncology has found that the new scan system, MRI is promoting more and more breast cancer patients to go for mastectomy rather than lumpcetomy. In mastectomy the whole breast is removed while in lumpcetomy only the tumor is removed. The study finds that MRI shows more abnormalities than the mammograms. This have made doctors and patients more worried.
The study that covers ten years from 1997 to 2006 includes nearly 5,500 breast cancer patients. It recorded a sharp rise to 43% in 2006 from 30% in 2003. Though the number was higher (45%) in 1997. Also the study finds that half of those who have gone through MRI opted for mastectomy compared to only 38% of those who have not gone through it.
