Moderate Exercise Reduces Breast Cancer Risk by 23%

Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine and Alberta Cancer Board have found that physical activity reduces the risk of breast cancer among both the pre and post menopausal women. The two studies have proved that regular physical activity can reduce at least 23% of the risk of the disease.

In the first study researchers from both the Washington and Harvard Universities have evaluated 65,000 women within the age group of 12 and 35. They found that activities like 3.25 hours of running or 13 hours a week reduce the risk of developing breast cancer.

Dr. Colditz, one author of the researcher group, explained that physically active women are less exposed to estrogen. It lessens the risk of breast cancer. If adolescent girls do exercise regularly, they are likely to begin menstuating later. As a result, they will have a lower level of estrogen in their bodies which will cut the risk of breast cancer.

The second study on the same subject finds that regular physical activities throughout the lives, can reduce the risk of breast cancer. Christine Friedenreich, of the researcher team finds that physical activity lowers down the risk of breast cancer by 25%. Thus her study is found to be consistent with the study of Dr. Coldritz. Dr. Friedenreich also said that regular physical activity in post menopausal women not only reduces the weight, but brings the risks of breast cancer down. The study has reviewed 62 similar studies to analyse the impact of exercise on breast cancer.
