Lying Awake on an Operating Table but Unable to Move
Imagine Lying on an operating Table Awake, screaming inside, but no one can hear you. Carol Weihrer’s life was forever changed by just such a surgical nightmare, reports CBS station WCBS-TV in New York.
Weihrer was having surgery to remove her diseased right eye when things went terribly wrong.
Suddenly she heard the surgeon say ‘cut deeper, pull harder’ to the resident and it occurred to her that she was awake, could hear everything and yet she was paralyzed and couldn’t inform anyone about her plight. It was a terrible nightmare come true. She simply wanted it to end.
Weihrer now suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. She can no longer teach music and has panic attacks, nightmares and difficulty sleeping.
“I cannot sleep in a bed,” she said. “I cannot lie down. I sleep in a recliner.”
Weihrer said she never wants anyone to go through what she did. She now campaigns to educate others about the tragedy, and advocate for the use of brain activity monitors in the operating room.
