Life After Kidney Transplantation: A Story
At 24, when Peter Leslie was admitted to hospital on the eve of Christmas he did not imagine that he would have to face the next Christmas with a new kidney. At this age, he had to go for kidney transplantation surgery at the St Mary’s hospital. And now at 67, he is one of the longest surviving kidney transplantation patients in the UK. It can be mentioned that he was one of the first patients to opt for kidney transplantation surgery.
It was way back in 1960, that the first kidney transplantation in the UK had taken place. Leslie had gone through kidney Transplant Surgery in 1965.
Lesile was admitted to hospital when the doctors suspected him of leukaemia. But later on, it was found that he has cysts at his kidneys, reducing their capacity to filter. Soon he was shifted to the Belfast City hospital where he was put on a daily regime of peritoneal dialysis - the precursor to modern hemodialysis. After a few months the doctors decided for the kidney transplant surgery.
Lesile, at 67 remember the day of surgery, when he understood that he was carrying a dead man’s kidney in his body. However, he was back to work by January 1966. His life turned normal as he got married and had a happy family life. He takes Immunosuppressive drugs every day to prevent rejection, and in the past 15 years.
