Kidney Transplantation In Kolkata: An Overview

Renal transplantation or kidney transplantation is the organ transplant of a kidney in a patient with end stage kidney disease. Kidney transplantation can be classified into two types: deceased-donor and living-donor transplantation. Living-donor renal transplants are further characterized as genetically related (living-related) or non-related (living-unrelated) transplants, depending on the biological relationship between the donor and recipient.
The process of kidney transplantation owes its origin to the USA in the year 1950. And the first person to undergo the process was 44 year old Ruth Tucker. She was a patient of poly-cystic kidney disease. The first kidney transplantation process took place at the Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, a Chicago suburb. Tucker died within five year after the surgery. However the first successful kidney transplantation took place in the year 1954 in Boston and Paris. There were twin brothers Richard and Ronald Herrick. Ronald donated one of his kidneys to Richard which was implemented successfully. In UK the first renal transplantation took place in 1960. It was Michael Woodruff who performed the surgery.
Kidney transplantation is a very common process in India now. Back home in Kolkata the process is gaining more importance as more and more hospitals are coming forward. We can take the name of the Apollo Gleneagles Hospital. The Hospital offers some excluisive facilities including well equipped renal transplantation unit. Apollo has done kidney transplantation of the youngest boy in eastern India.
Then comes the name of Wockhard Hospital. The hospital also offers some facilities in renal transplantation. It offers facilities like two types of dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Hemodialysis; most people undergo three dialysis sessions each week, for about four hours each time. A person is connected to the dialysis machine via the shunt. Peritoneal Dialysis(CAPD); utilizes the peritoneal membrane, which is the lining of the abdominal cavity. The peritoneal membrane is very large, and has a rich blood supply. Other than that the hospital offers facilities like Kidney Transplant, Renal Medicine and Clinical Expertise.
Another hospital that offers renal transplantation surgery, is the Belle Vue Clinic. The hospital offers many other necessary benefits.
