IVF Treatment Increased the Rate of Multiple Birth

Britain is planning to regulate the number of embryos implanted through in vitro fertilization after a surge in women having multiple births, a report says.

The Observer reported that medical experts are alarmed at the number of multiple births experienced by women who have undergone IVF treatment, saying multiple births put the lives of both women and babies at risk.

The fertility regulator, the Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority, plans to announce this week that it will only allow would-be mothers to receive one embryo rather than two, which is the current limit, The Observer said. Only a minority of women, including older women and those who have not responded well to treatment, will be able to receive more than one embryo.

But many would-be mothers and their supporters are expressing anger at the new rule, saying it limits the chances of successful births by women who want to have children.

In Britain, an estimated 30,000 women undergo IVF treatment each year.
