Independent Confirmation of Menstrual Blood Stem Cell Utility in Repairing Heart after Heart Attack

Medistem Laboratories Inc., a biotechnology company has found that stem cell, derived from menstrual blood could differentiate into 9 major tissues, produce high levels of therapeutic factors, and was capable of massive in-vitro expansion. Menstrual blood derived stem cell is considered as a viable alternative to embryonic stem cells.

In November 2007, the team of scientists said that Endometrial Regenerative Cell, a menstrual blood derived stem cell, is capable of not only becoming heart tissue in vitro, but also having ability to repair injured hearts. The endometrial regenerative cell, their leading product, is an “universal donor” stem cell derived from the menstrual blood. The study that is freely available at http://www.translational-medicine.com/content/5/1/57 was awarded BioMed Central’s Best Publication in Medicine of 2007.

To conclude, the study applauds a recent publication from an independent Japanese group. Thomas Ichim, CEO of Medistem expressed his pleasure for the prestigious Keio University School of Medicine, Tokyo, for such approval of their study.
