Gold winning story of Leukemia survivor - Van der Weijden
Today we are going to share a story of a person who has proved that if one decides to achieve something then nothing came across its way. This story is tale of triumph over adversity.
The story is of leukemia survivor Van der Weijden. Who was known as a promising swimming talent in his youth, becoming Dutch national champion at the 1500m freestyle (1998 (short course and long course), 1999 (lc) and 2000 (lc)), 400m freestyle (1999 (sc+lc) and 2000 (lc)) and 5 km open water (2000).
He also participated at the 1999 European Junior Championships and the 2000 Open Water World Championships Maarten van der Wijden’s.
But suddenly the Dutchman, 27, was diagnosed with leukemia - cancer of the bone marrow and white blood cells - in March 2001. Doctors also informed him that he had narrow chance of escaping death.
But now with the help of chemotherapy and stem cell transplant, Maarten has beaten cancer and has become another sporting fairytale to seize the gold medal in the men’s 10km race in water.
