Genetically Altered Mice Prove Possibility To Treat Type 2 Diabetes & Obesity Medically, Human Trial Soon
The type 2 diabetes as well as obesity can be treated by blocking a naturally occuring hormone in the body. The Elixir Pharmacutical Inc. claims to be successful in creating a genetically altered mice that lack the receptor of the ghrelin, a naturally occurring hormone in the body that regulates metabolism and also stimulates appetite. Elixir claims the study will be helpful to develop drugs that will be helpful to block the ghrelin receptor in the body.
Elixir developed its data by comparing the genetically engineered mice with regular mice after eating a high-fat diet. The genetically made mice shows much lower level of hemoglobin, which at low volumes shows better blood sugar control in diabetic patients. Also they have shown a lower level of plasma glucose. A human clinical trial is expected to start next year.
