Clycone Nargis Left Thousands HIV/AIDS Patients Homeless
Thousands of people have died and many others left homeless when the cyclone Nargis hit the Irrawaddy delta in Rangoon valley recently. But for the HIV/AIDS patients it was a worse nightmare as the cyclone has put them into more physical and mental agony. As a result of the devastation, more and more people are opting to the Rangoon Division and the larger towns in the Irrawaddy delta are seeking assistance.
According to some social welfare groups in the country, many HIV patients in the country have lost everything in the aftermath of the cyclone. Yazar, a member of the National League for Democracy, said that their patients are suffering as they are poor and have left homeless and hungry. It can be added that the NLD-affiliated social welfare group helps care for more than 2, 000 people living with HIV/AIDS across Burma. About 50 patients live in two houses in Rangoon.
In an exclusive interview with The Irrawaddy a well known HIV/AIDS activist said that he was contacted by many AIDS patients for help.
“Problems are coming at us from many directions. We have limited resources, and as more and more people seek help, we’re worried about meeting their needs in the future.” concluded Yazar, of the National League for Democracy.
