Brick Kiln Pollution Causing Asthma, Lung Cancer… In Rawalpindi, Pakistan
The air pollution emitted by brick kilns in Rawalpindi is causing serious health problems like asthma, lung cancer and in some cases serious eye infections among its inhabitants. There are nearly 50 brick kilns in the Rawalpindi and Islamabad jurisdiction. But the state authority is silent over the issue.
Environment Department Deputy Director General Dr. Sheikh Suleman told media that according to 1997 Act of Pakistan. Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has issued notices to owners of brick kilns set up in residential areas. Moreover, in absence of filtration plants, the smoke become more dangerous.
On the other hand, owners of the brick kilns told media that they are trying to install a filtration plants to avoid pollution. At the same time, they say that the plants are too expensive and they also demand govt. help.
Local residents also blame the brick kilns for environmental pollution and various health problems especially among children.
